Four Digital Marketing Tactics That Will Help Your Company Stand Out

The best news, is that they are all FREE!

As you can imagine, there are more people using the internet than ever. In fact, there are 5.11 billion unique mobile users in the world today, and 4.39 billion internet users. This includes people who are actively looking for your products or services.

If you’re looking for ways to improve your business with a limited (or no) budget, this article is for you.

Most businesses I speak with would love for their website to produce more leads. Who wouldn’t want that? In many instances, businesses pass these duties off to a digital marketing agency to improve their internet performance. But not all!

Budgets are tight for most, and many businesses aren’t in a position of being able to invest in digital marketing. The great news is that there are numerous digital marketing strategies available to you that don’t cost a dime. Granted, they do take time to manage and maintain, however, done properly they can have a significant impact on both your website and your business.

What IS Digital Marketing?

Digital marketing is a series of marketing strategies that are used to market your business on the internet, and other digital platforms, including mobile phones. This includes search engines, social media, email, video and more. Unlike traditional marketing services, which can include printed materials, digital marketing relies entirely on digital platforms.

Benefits of Digital Marketing?

Effective digital marketing will provide you with many benefits. Clearly, more visiblity is one of them. However, using these four strategies will also improve your credibility and build trust with your audience.

Online Reviews

Let’s face it, people love to read reviews. It doesn’t matter if you’re shopping for machining services Denver, web design in Minneapolis, or new tennis shoes. Reviews make a huge difference in quickly establishing trust.

Recent research by Fan & Fuel shows a few important statistics that support this. Link: NO ONLINE CUSTOMER REVIEWS MEANS BIG PROBLEMS

Quick Facts About Online Reviews:

One of the most important things you can do to attract new business is to focus on your online reviews.

Countless statistics cite the powerful effects online reviews have on influencing buyers.

Think about your own shopping experience. Take Amazon, for example. Do you ever purchase something new without considering the product’s ratings or reviews?

Of course not!

You can bank on the fact that people searching for your services are paying attention to your reviews (or lack of) as well.

OK, so where should I seek online reviews?

Wherever you can get them! Google attracts the greatest amount of attention, but other sites including Yelp, Bing and Facebook will all help.

With favorable reviews, you’ve got a built-in advantage for someone shopping for your services online, and it didn’t cost you a dime! Without them?….Well, you’re missing out.

How Do I Get Online Reviews?

Ask! Don’t be shy. Google and Yelp are a great place to start, and Google actually encourages businesses to actively seek out reviews. Link: GET REVIEWS ON GOOGLE. If you have a core group of loyal customers, that’s a great starting point.

Explain to them that you are trying to promote your company on the internet and ask if they’d be willing to submit an honest review about your company to help others in search of your products or services.

How about this?

Offer a small incentive for each employee who is able to secure a customer review. Set a company goal.

Once you achieve 10 Google reviews, buy lunch for the office. Have a drawing for a nice prize (or a free day off!). Each review is worth an entry. Now THAT is dirt cheap advertising! Here’s the kicker.

Your competitors aren’t doing this! Yet.

HOWEVER (IMPORTANT!)

In order for someone to leave you an online review, your business needs to have a profile set up with Google My Business, Yelp, Facebook, and anywhere else you’d like to receive reviews. Without this in place, there’s no opportunity for them to leave you a review.

Why not just Google?

Yes, Google is the most widely used platform for online searches. The downside, is in order for your customer to leave you a review on Google, they need a Gmail account.

If they don’t have one, the likelihood that they’ll sign up for Gmail in order to leave you a review is zero.

By offering other platforms for people to review your business, you’re increasing the likelihood of receiving reviews. When it comes to asking for online reviews, you want to make it as easy as possible, so give ’em a choice!

WHERE DO I SEND PEOPLE FOR REVIEWS?

Often times, people don’t know where to go to leave a review on line. You’ll want to send them to your profile pages at the review sites.

Here’s a couple of ideas that often work well.

  1. Use your email signature to ask for reviews, with a link to your review URL. You can create your own review link, which
  2. Add a “Review us” link on your website that links directly to your review page.

Make it as easy as possible for your customers to review you.  By including a “Review us on Google” link in your email signature, you can provide the exact review page without having to research where to go.

Note the “Review us on Google” text at the bottom of the signature. Simply create a hyperlink to your review page with whatever text you’d like to use. Now every email that leaves your company is an opportunity to capture another review. Pretty cool stuff! But hold on….

Where do I get my Google review link?

  1. Sign into your Google My Business page.
  2. Make sure “Home” is selected from the menu on the left. In the right column you’ll see a box that says “Get more reviews” with a link.
  3. Copy that link, and use that to share with your customers.
Of course, you could just as easily also add or replace this with “Review us on Yelp” “Review us on Facebook”, etc.

Employee Reviews!

Reviews aren’t just for your customers. Your employees can play a vital role in your digital marketing efforts as well. Are you familiar with Glassdoor?

Current and former employees can share their experience working for your company on Glassdoor, and the results often show up very high in Google’s search results.

Think negative employee reviews could hurt your company? For sure!

On the other hand, positive reviews can definitely help. If you’re treating your employees right, you should have no problem getting them to write an honest, positive review about your company.

We always suggest getting ahead of the curve with Glassdoor, as typically disgruntled employees are the most active online voices.

Conclusion? People are naturally skeptical, and by having unbiased third party reviews both from customers and employees, you can help to remove their skepticism.

This is one free way to gain a leg up on your competition in the world of digital marketing.

Social Media

Do you have a company Facebook page and LinkedIn page? If not, you should. It doesn’t matter what business you’re in.

It’s not about specifically selling your services on LinkedIn or Facebook, it’s about building your credibility as a resource in your space.

Having a complete profile on the social platforms, with activity sends favorable signals to the search engines. That’s a good thing for any business.

Participating in social media is free for your business, and without dispute can improve your website visibility and your business credibility.

One important statistic from a Hubspot survey shows that 93% of all marketers indicated that their social media efforts have generated more exposure for their businesses.

Having a company page is a great first step, but let’s take it a step further and look at things your competitors AREN’T doing very well.

Employee buy in – Do each of your employees have a LinkedIn profile? They should!

Are they following your company on LinkedIn, liking, commenting on and sharing content that you’re posting? How about Facebook?

Employee participation is your lowest hanging fruit to kick start your social media campaign.

Each employee has their own network which means that for each employee who follows your page, your audience grows exponentially.

Free exposure! Pretty cool, huh? Google looks at social media cues as part of their search engine rankings, and it absolutely can help your search engine optimization.

You can do this without even hiring a SEO company. Give it a shot!

How do you get your employees motivated to participate in your new social media strategy? How about the fact that you all share one common goal: Your company’s success!

By helping you, they’re actually helping themselves. Share this message with them in an all-company meeting, for example. It really is a win-win.

If that’s not enough, bribery works too! How about an extended lunch for each individual who likes or follows your company page?

You can get to 100% participation with the right messaging.

What about content? What should you be posting on social media?

A few ideas might include a new product or service. Highlight one employee each month. Talk about upcoming events. Discuss a recent project or problem your company solved.

Showcase your knowledge with a “how-to”. Providing content that your audience will take an interest in leads to likes, shares and loyal followers.

Videos are huge! If how-to’s make sense for your space create a how-to video that shows how to solve a specific problem. YouTube is free too!

Create a link from YouTube to your website, and now you’re adding more value to your website as well!

Too busy to write the content yourself?

Of course, you could hire a professional content writer to do it for you, but try to leverage your internal resources first.

Put someone in charge of writing one article each month, and offer a benefit of some form in return. Sometimes, time away from their daily duties to write the content is enough of an incentive.

You’d be surprised how often people step up internally and are willing to pitch in.

Give it a shot!

Testimonials

You’ve done your job with your new internet marketing strategy and your website is starting to attract attention. Great! Now how can you help to ensure your website stands out?

One surefire way that is often overlooked is the use of testimonials on websites.

If your competitors have testimonials on their website and you don’t, you are at a significant disadvantage.

If they’re not using them out on their website yet, you have a golden opportunity to differentiate your company. Fantastic news! This one’s FREE too!

Why are testimonials important?

For the same reasons we talked about in the reviews section. People are skeptics, and if they see people speaking favorably about you, that may make the difference between a phone call, or not.

If you don’t want to broadcast specifics about your customer (first name, last name, company, title), keep it more general. It will still have an impact.

How do you get people to give you a testimonial? Just ask! Don’t be shy.

If you’re in the Business to consumer space, testimonials can be absolutely critical. One of our custom cabinetry website clients has a testimonial page on their website that includes a built-in testimonial form.

This allows their customers to upload testimonials directly from their website.

Talk about easy! The easier you can make it for them, the more likely your customers are to follow through with a review or testimonial.

Be straightforward about your objective, and you’ll be surprised how many of your customers will write a fantastic testimonial for you.
